Community Health Network Foundation Names Derek B. Groves President and CEO

For release on April 20, 2026

INDIANAPOLIS (April 20, 2026) — Community Health Network Foundation has named Derek B. Groves, PhD, as its next President and Chief Executive Officer, succeeding longtime leader Joyce Irwin, who will retire on July 3 after nearly 14 years in the role.

Groves will begin his role on May 18, 2026, as part of a planned leadership transition.

He currently serves as interim president of the University of Toledo and UT Medical Center Foundation, where he leads philanthropic strategy, governance, and organizational alignment during a period of transition.

Groves is a nonprofit and health‑system leader with more than 15 years of experience growing philanthropic support for mission‑centered organizations. His background includes leading principal and major giving programs, grateful patient fundraising, and comprehensive campaigns across integrated health systems and academic medicine.

Previously, Groves served as chief operating officer of the same foundation and later as the inaugural president and chief development officer of a multi‑state healthcare foundation. In that role, he led systemwide philanthropic strategy, endowment development, and organizational growth, including the expansion of grateful patient fundraising and clinician engagement initiatives.

“Derek brings deep experience in healthcare philanthropy and a strong understanding of how charitable investment can support patient care, workforce development, and community health,” said Patrick McGill, president and CEO of Community Health Network. “He is well positioned to build on the strong foundation Joyce has established.”

Groves holds a doctorate in organizational leadership and a master's degree in organizational management. His academic research focused on leadership’s role in shaping organizational culture, performance, and employee engagement.

Joyce Irwin will remain in her role through July 3 and assist with the leadership transition.

The public announcement of Groves’ appointment was made during Giving Gig on April 18, Community Health Network Foundation’s annual fundraising event, which raised a record-breaking $2.4 million to help cancer patients in financial need.
