Community Howard to expand access to primary care with mobile clinic

For release on September 19, 2022

Community Howard Regional Health held a ribbon cutting on September 14 in conjunction with the launch of its Community CareMobile mobile primary care clinic in downtown Kokomo.

At the September 14 launch the hospital announced the Community CareMobile clinic will be located between City Hall and the trolley station each Wednesday. The clinic, which is staffed by a nurse practitioner, will operate out of the CareMobile – a 40-foot health bus equipped with an exam room and traditional testing equipment found in a doctor’s office.

“We are thrilled to bring this service to downtown Kokomo to offer needed primary care services to those who live, work or receive other services there in the downtown area,” said Jennifer Hindman, hospital administrator for Community Howard Regional Health. “We know there is a need for healthcare services in the downtown area and believe the CareMobile provides a unique way to bring those services directly to those in need. I want to thank Mayor Moore and his administration for partnering with the hospital to allow the use of the city’s parking lot for this weekly clinic.”

The Community CareMobile was donated to the hospital by the Community Howard Regional Health Foundation in 2011 and is used at multiple events throughout the year to provide health screenings. Over the course of the past year additional equipment, including an exam table and lab equipment, was purchased by the hospital foundation to help outfit the new mobile clinic.

“Expanding the CareMobile’s use to a true doctor’s office on wheels opens up a new avenue for Community Howard to fulfil its mission of ensuring convenient access to care,” said Hindman. “As we start the Wednesday clinic downtown we will also be looking at additional needs and opportunities to serve other neighborhoods and communities.”

The CareMobile clinic will operate out of the City Hall parking lot just to the south of the trolley station from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. The clinic will offer traditional primary care services for adults, including annual exams, sick visits, vaccinations and basic lab tests. Appointments will be based on walk-in availability, with the future expansion to online scheduling.
