Dr. Young Ki Park grew up helping in his family’s practice where his father specialized in herbalism and acupuncture. Seeing the amazing results of his father’s treatments led Dr. Park into the medical field following a dream. “I realized if I could combine the best of eastern and western medicine, I would become the most effective doctor I could be.” Now practicing family medicine and integrative medicine for Community Health Network, Dr. Park has truly combined the best of both worlds to deliver personalized care to his patients. Here’s how.
What Is Integrative Medicine?
Young Ki Park, DO,
integrative medicine specialist
It’s simple, according to Dr. Park, “Integrative care uses all appropriate medical modalities to treat and prevent disease and illness while taking into account the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.” By combining conventional medicine like surgery and pharmaceuticals with complementary care like herbalism and acupuncture, integrative medicine finds the modalities that work best for any patient.
The Evolution of Integrative Medicine
Care is constantly evolving, Dr. Park says. “Look at the innovations that have happened in hundreds of years of western medicine. We’ve created incredible surgical technologies and medications.” Western medicine becomes better and better every year for diagnosing and treating acute illness and injury.
But some chronic illnesses are still difficult for western medicine to treat, which is where integrative medicine excels by helping the body heal naturally. “Our job isn’t to cure, it’s to create a healing environment and let the body take over,” Dr. Park explains. As more patients and physicians are becoming aware of the benefits of integrative medicine, we’re seeing more collaboration and communication between integrative and conventional practitioners.
The Care that Works for You
One of Dr. Park’s main philosophies when it comes to integrative medicine is treating each patient in the modality that suits them best. “In traditional western medicine there is protocol. For me, if ten patients walk in my door with similar issues, I’ll treat all ten differently,” Dr. Park shares. “We try and find the least invasive, most cost-effective, and safest care for each individual.”
Dr. Park works with all kinds of people. From oncology patients looking for help managing side effects from chemo to hypertension to diabetes to chronic headaches. “Whatever patient walks through my door, that’s what I treat.”
Integrative medicine is also a wonderful way to manage pain without medication. While Dr. Park won’t ever remove a patient from a physician-prescribed pain medication, he will implement integrative practices to help patients eventually manage pain without medication such as acupuncture, cupping, and blading therapy. By combining modalities, patients don’t have to rely as heavily on medications that can have dangerous side effects.
