INDIANAPOLIS (August 18, 2026) – Community Health Network is expanding access to minimally invasive robotic surgery with the addition of the da Vinci Single Port (SP) surgical system at Community Hospital North.
The advanced robotic platform allows specially trained surgeons to perform select cancer and tumor-related procedures through a single small incision, offering patients a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery. Scheduling is now open for breast and urology patients and expected to expand to include colorectal and thoracic cases this fall.
The da Vinci SP system is designed to help surgeons access difficult-to-reach areas of the body with enhanced precision while minimizing disruption to surrounding healthy tissue. Potential benefits include less pain, smaller scars, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times.
"This technology represents another step forward in providing patients with access to advanced treatment options close to home," said Joshua Manghelli, MD, breast surgeon with Community Health Network. "The robot allows for smaller incisions and enhanced recovery times. Cosmetic outcomes are superior to the traditional mastectomy approach, and there is potential to retain sensation to the breasts."
Unlike traditional robotic platforms that may require multiple entry points, the da Vinci SP system uses a single access point, allowing surgeons to operate in narrow and difficult-to-reach spaces that can be challenging to access through conventional surgical approaches.
"The new technology allows the surgeon to work in difficult-to-access, tight and narrow spaces with fine detail and precision without large incisions and compromise to bowel function," said Sanjay Thekkeurumbil, MD, colon and rectal surgeon with Community Health Network.
"From a thoracic surgeon standpoint, the single-port robot has fundamentally changed how we approach the chest," said Dr. Pulikal, thoracic surgeon with Community Health Network. "By working through one small incision, we reduce trauma to the intercostal nerves, maintain exceptional visualization and gain the precision needed for complex maneuvers in tight spaces. The result is a safer operation for the patient, with less pain, faster recovery and the same oncologic rigor we demand from open surgery."
