Community MD Anderson’s First Stem Cell Transplant Patients Mark Milestone for New Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy Institute

For release on October 21, 2024

New program, launched at Community Howard Regional Health, provides access to advanced stem cell therapies

Indianapolis, IN— October 22, 2024 — Community Health Network MD Anderson Cancer Center is proud to announce the official launch of its Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy Institute (SCTCTI). Community MD Anderson admitted its first stem cell transplant patients, marking a pivotal moment in cancer care for central Indiana.

This new institute, located on the campus of Community Howard Regional Health, and first announced by Community MD Anderson late last year, provides access to advanced cell therapies, such as stem cell transplants, Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR-T cell) and tumor infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy. Stem cell transplants are vital for treating cancer patients who experience severe side effects from treatment or have immune deficiencies. CAR-T and TIL therapy enhance the body’s own immune cells to fight cancer effectively.

Under the supervision of Dr. Sherif Farag, Medical Director for the Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy Institute, the first patient underwent an autologous transplant, a procedure where a patient’s own stem cells are harvested, cryopreserved, and then reinfused after high-dose chemotherapy, to restore healthy blood cells.

The second patient received a haploidentical (half-match) allogeneic transplant, a more complex procedure involving stem cells from a related adult donor. This transplant, known for its medical intricacies, represents a significant achievement for the new program and highlights the advanced capabilities of the SCTCTI team at Community.

“We are proud to have successfully initiated these life-saving procedures for patients in need of a transplant,” said Dr. Farag. “Our transplant team has extensive experience in this field, and we know how important it is for patients to remain connected to their local care team while receiving cutting-edge stem cell and cellular therapies, ensuring convenience and continuity of care."

Community MD Anderson is designed to offer patients in Central Indiana and beyond access to world-renowned cancer care close to home. With innovative treatment protocols, patients benefit from the expertise of a multidisciplinary team of oncology specialists.

The program is set to expand further, offering services across the region on the campus of Community Hospital North, and providing enhanced cancer treatment options for all Community MD Anderson patients.
