Community Health Network Collects 900 Lbs of Medication in Drug Take Back Event

For release on October 26, 2024

INDIANAPOLIS (October 26, 2024) – Today, 900 pounds of medication were collected at Community Health Network sites of care for safe disposal. Five Community facilities served as drop off spots for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) sponsored National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

The drop off sites included:

  • Community Health Network MD Anderson Cancer Center North
  • Community Hospital South
  • Community Hospital East
  • Community Howard Regional Health
  • Community Hospital Anderson

Proper disposal of prescriptions and over-the-counter medications keeps homes and communities safer. “It’s so important to get unused and unneeded medications out of cabinets”, said Eleni Drake, Community Hospital North Pharmacy Director. “This prevents potential mix-ups of medications, or inadvertent ingestion by a child or pet.”

It can also ensure that personal information on prescription bottles will not be used for identity theft and reduce the risk of intentional misuse of the medication. “We accept medication with bottles or without, the patient information is safely disposed of in a HIPAA-compliant manner”, said Drake. “In our partnership with the State Board of Pharmacy and DEA, the medications are taken to a disposal facility downtown and incinerated. This is a way we meet the needs of our neighbors. By providing an easy, safe, and free way to dispose of unneeded medications, we make our homes less likely to have a medication error.”

Community caregivers collected a total of 900 pounds of medication during the four-hour Drug Take Back event. That weight is equivalent to two trash dumpsters.
