Community Health Network First in Indiana To Utilize New FDA-Approved Procedure for Challenging Heart Condition

For release on August 23, 2024

Community Health Network is using new innovative technology to treat a challenging heart issue. Community Heart and Vascular Hospital became the first healthcare facility in Indiana to treat a patient with coronary in-stent restenosis with a new therapy, the AGENT™ Drug-Coated Balloon (DCB). The drug-coated balloon is used to re-open a previously stented artery that has narrowed again due to plaque or scar tissue.

In-stent restenosis occurs in up to 10% of stented patients. Factors including high cholesterol, smoking, uncontrolled diabetes or high blood pressure, and kidney disease can increase the risk for patients for in-stent restenosis. This can be a life-threatening issue making patients more prone to heart problems like unstable angina, acute coronary syndrome, and heart attacks.

The AGENT DCB was approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration earlier this year as a treatment option for this challenging condition. While this therapy is new in the U.S., it has been used to treat more than 100,000 patients globally.

Dr. Scott Sharp became the first cardiologist in Indiana to treat a patient with the AGENT™ DCB. He said, “This new option furthers our ability to reduce the recurrence of in-stent restenosis, allowing for direct delivery of preventative medication without leaving behind an additional stent layer. We are excited about this new therapy that will make a difference in our patients’ lives.”

More information on the AGENT™ DCB is available here.
