Patient care techs are essential members of the healthcare team, helping to monitor and care for patients with a range of medical conditions.

As a patient care technician, you'll assist with examination and treatment of patients, measure vital signs and monitoring health, collect samples, record information on patients’ charts, and prepare treatment rooms for examination. You may perform a variety of basic patient care needs, from feeding and transportation of patients to catheter care and dressing changes.

Grow Your Career as a Patient Care Tech

A patient care tech role is a building block for advancing your career in healthcare, including nursing. Community offers programs in which you may start out as a paid patient care tech, gaining hands-on experience in clinical settings, on a path to becoming a nurse.

Nursing SPARK Program

The SPARK program is for students enrolled in an accredited nursing program in Indiana, with an interest in ICU, PCU, med/surg or ED nursing. Students will gain hands-on experience through a paid position as a senior patient care technician – student extern*. Positions offer flexible work hours, a variety of units and care levels, mentorship by clinical leaders at Community, and much more, with the opportunity to be hired into a new grad position at Community after nursing school.

*Senior PCT student externs must be accepted in an accredited program and have at least one semester of nursing school completed.

Nursing Scholar Program

Community Health Network and Ivy Tech Community College have partnered for the CHNw Nursing Scholars Program. Eligible nursing students are those who are admitted into the ASN Traditional Track at Ivy Tech Indianapolis/Lawrence, Hamilton County, Kokomo, or Anderson campus.

Nursing Scholar students work as a senior patient care technician at Community Health Network while in nursing school. After college graduation, nursing scholar students are required to work for Community Health Network for three years as a full-time registered nurse.
