From prenatal care to labor and delivery, you want expert care for you and your baby. Fortunately, you have choices when it comes to your care team.
Obstetricians (OBs)
Obstetricians (OBs) manage normal and high-risk pregnancies. They are also called upon if there are complications during delivery.
During pregnancy, OBs will help you maintain your health through regular appointments, routine lab tests and ultrasounds. From prenatal care to delivery to postpartum, OBs offer expert care and advice.
Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs)
Like OBs, certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) also have special training in pregnancy and delivery. If complications arise, midwives can collaborate with OBs to support you during labor and delivery.
Midwives also offer counseling and education. They concentrate on communicating with you and focus on your family with respect for your cultural values and personal preferences. Your midwife might see you for health or counseling appointments, and she will be with you through your entire labor and delivery.
After birth, your midwife will help you with breastfeeding and infant care.
If you’re looking for a birth plan with fewer interventions within the safety of a hospital, a Community midwife may be a good choice for you.
Additional Support
Doulas
After you establish care with either an OB or a midwife, you may also choose to add a doula to your care team for your delivery. Doulas are labor support partners who are trained in physical and emotional support during birth. They will help you manage labor, even before going to the hospital, and will provide support during your delivery. After birth, your doula will continue to offer support with follow-up appointments.
Perinatal Nurse Navigation Program
We also have a Perinatal Nurse Navigation Program that is designed for women who are at higher risk of complications, such as preterm delivery or postpartum issues, often due to medical conditions or life challenges. Special nurses called perinatal nurse navigators lead the program, and they help women during pregnancy and for up to a year after the baby arrives.
You can meet with these nurses virtually or in person, when needed. They can connect you to community resources, doctors who are experts, and teach you about breastfeeding, safe sleep for your baby, and how to make your home healthy for both of you.
To join, you need to receive prenatal care at one of our OB/GYN clinics and your care team must refer you. Our main goal is to help every mom have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. For questions about the program, please reach out to your doctor or nurse directly.
