Community Howard Regional Health Awarded Advanced Primary Stroke Center Certification

For release on March 14, 2022

Kokomo—Community Howard Regional Health has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® and the American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Advanced Primary Stroke Center Certification.

Community Howard underwent a rigorous review earlier this month to be re-accredited for Advanced Primary Stroke Center Certification. During the review, Joint Commission reviewers evaluated compliance with stroke-related standards and requirements, including program management, the delivery of clinical care and performance improvement.

“To receive this mark of excellence from The Joint Commission for our ability to care for stroke patients is a testament to the commitment we have made to deliver advanced-level care right here in Kokomo,” said Jennifer Hindman, VP, Hospital Administrator. “I am very proud of our entire team for working so hard to receive this distinction yet again.”

In addition to now being accredited once again as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center, Community Howard also holds The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Chest Pain Certification. With two cardiac cath labs and a physician led team of cardiovascular experts, Community Howard is the only hospital in Kokomo to offer around-the-clock interventional treatment for patients experiencing a heart attack.

“We know that this community wants to be able to receive their care locally and we are continually looking for ways to build on the quality of care and the array of services we offer,” said Hindman. “We believe that offering comprehensive cardiac care and this level of care for stroke patients is an important part of improving the overall health and wellness of the surrounding community.”

In the United States cardiovascular disease causes 1 in 3 deaths, or more than 859,000 people each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission seeks to continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value. The Joint Commission is the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in healthcare.
