Indianapolis—Community Health Network launched a new police department today with a virtual swearing-in ceremony.
The police force includes 60 officers who work with existing security personnel to provide a more comprehensive range of services that will cover all Community sites of care. The department has its own criminal investigative unit and officers have the authority to detain and arrest individuals when necessary.
“At Community, one of our highest priorities is ensuring the safety of our patients and our employees and that includes a strong focus on the security of our facilities,” said Community Health Network Executive Director of Safety and Security Kevin Mahan. “This addition to our security team will provide a greater ability to respond to security-related needs both on and off our hospital campuses.”
Recognizing the unique security challenges facing hospitals, a state law passed in 2013 allows those organizations to create their own police departments. Since then, several Indiana hospitals have taken that step, including Community Hospital Anderson.
Community named John Jester the new department’s chief of police.
Officers were sworn-in as Community leaders and Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter offered remarks to mark the launch. The ceremony was streamed so families could watch from home.
