Community Fairbanks Behavioral Health Behavioral Health Academy™
Did you know that as of 2023, all 92 counties in Indiana have federally designated shortages of behavioral health professionals?
The Community Fairbanks Behavioral Health Behavioral Health Academy™ makes an impact across the state of Indiana, helping to increase the number of behavioral health therapists trained to treat both mental health and substance use issues, making comprehensive behavioral health treatment more accessible.
The reality is that today’s behavioral health issues are complex and often intertwined. The Behavioral Health Academy (BHA) philosophy emphasizes a co-occurring treatment lens, rather than separating mental health and substance use treatment. We believe clients are best served by addressing the whole person and prepare our therapists to confidently and competently provide both mental health AND substance use treatment.
We have been fortunate to partner with statewide agencies and university programs as well as secure funding to support the growth of the Behavioral Health Academy. This important work is generously funded by multiple grants aimed at increasing the behavioral health workforce in Indiana and treating the complex mental health and substance use needs of Hoosiers. Since the inception of the Behavioral Health Academy in 2019, we have received over $5 million in grant funding.
What Is the Behavioral Health Academy™?
The Behavioral Health Academy (BHA) offers a streamlined path to a career in behavioral health. Through the program, you earn a master’s degree in social work or mental health counseling, preparation for dual licensure to treat both substance-use disorders and complex mental health issues and gain significant hands-on experience that makes you job-ready as soon as you graduate. You also receive a stipend to offset costs and, in most cases, receive employment opportunities upon graduation.
The Behavioral Health Academy partners with universities and behavioral health provider organizations across the state of Indiana. The Behavioral Health Academy programming supports social work and mental health counseling students in learning evidence-based therapeutic practices to treat clients with co-occurring mental health and substance use challenges. Students gain hands-on therapeutic experience that prepares them for a career at a Community Mental Health center or Certified Community Behavioral Health Center.
The Behavioral Health Academy uses an innovative model that provides all the academic and internship experience needed to gain dual licensure increasing skill and confidence to provide therapeutic treatments to a diverse population.
When students join the Behavioral Health Academy they receive:

Behavioral Health Academy Format
Curriculum at university partners meets state requirements for dual licensure
Co-occurring field placement experience (2-semester internship/practicum)
Virtual Friday group supervision and training
Our university partners work with the Professional Licensing Boards to ensure their coursework meets the requirements for dual licensure in clinical addictions counseling along with the primary license in social work or mental health counseling.
Through observation, co-facilitation, and facilitation, students will gain exposure to the DSM and diagnosis, assessment, treatment planning, and documenting in the electronic medical records system at their placement agency. Students will gain experience in staffing client cases, balancing caseloads to meet agency standards including client contact hours or productivity, and agency culture.
Students receive additional training in core evidence-based practices to build on university coursework. Students practice applying this knowledge through case conceptualizations and practicing the skills under each evidence-based intervention. Students learn and practice motivational interviewing as a foundation to all client work and receive an endorsement in Motivational Interviewing as recognition of this in-depth training. Students also receive support in the licensure application process and test preparation materials. Students completing the Behavioral Health Academy also have an opportunity for priority job interviews at their agency of placement.

Students participate across 2 academic semesters for final practicum or internship. Students should plan to average about 20 hours/week of practicum/internship experience to complete university academic program requirements for graduation. Group supervision (3 hours, twice monthly) is included in those hours.
Students will complete all hours required by their program (approx. 600-700), including group training and supervision, individual supervision, and direct client experiences. Practicum/internship hours will meet full requirements for the clinical addiction counselor license, as well as social work or mental health counselor license.
