Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA)

  • 10-week course – 3 hrs/night, 1 night a week for total of 42 class hours; allow approximately 4 hours/week outside of class for homework.
  • Medical administrative assistants (also called medical office assistants or medical secretaries) are critical in keeping healthcare offices running smoothly and play an important role in the patient experience.
  • Tasks and responsibilities vary by setting, but may include:
    • Reviewing and answering practice correspondence
    • Answering phones and maintaining databases
    • Greeting and checking in patients for scheduled appointments and updating electronic medical records
    • Updating and maintaining patient and other practice-specific information
    • Tracking medical records and charts
    • Coordinating operation reports such as time and attendance
    • Implementing HIPAA procedures and adhering to the patient bill of rights and confidentiality
    • Transferring lab results to appropriate technicians
    • An understanding of:
      • Ethical and legal issues, fraud abuse, and compliance
      • Communication techniques
      • Financial and practice management
      • Health insurance coverage, and billing and coding procedures
      • Professional fees, billing and collecting procedures, accounting systems and credit arrangements
      • Medical terminology used in the office
  • Course fee: $2,900 ($100 nonrefundable deposit due with registration submission will apply to total course fees)
