What Is General Surgery?

It may surprise you to know that general surgery is actually a specialty, as it focuses on specific areas of the body. Many surgical procedures fall under the umbrella of general surgery, including routine abdominal surgeries and removal of lumps and bumps:

  • Abdominal surgery
  • Appendix removal (appendectomy)
  • Gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy)
  • GERD surgery (for acid reflux)
  • Hernia repair
  • Laparotomy (incision of the abdominal cavity to examine organs and aid in diagnosis)
  • Lump and bump removal
  • Mole removal
  • Spleen removal (splenectomy)

Expert Techniques

Our surgeons use laparoscopic surgery when possible. With this technique, the surgeon makes very small incisions and uses a tiny camera to perform the procedure. Laparoscopic surgery is considered minimally invasive. Patients benefit from quicker procedures, fewer complications and shorter recovery time.

Depending on the surgery, your surgeon may perform a robotic-assisted surgery using the da Vinci® Surgical System. The system is powered by state-of-the-art robotic technology that enhances surgical capabilities. It allows your surgeon’s hand movements to be translated into precise movements of micro-instruments within the operation area.

What To Expect

Most general surgeries are elective — scheduled ahead of time and planned out with a surgical team. Most patients come in for surgery and leave the same or next day, with follow-up appointments as needed depending on the case and patient.

After an initial diagnosis, patients are referred to the general surgery department for a consultation appointment as soon as possible. During the consultation, we review patient history, symptoms, treatment options, and the risks and benefits of surgery — to determine if surgery is the right fit.

Once you feel confident in your care plan, your procedure is scheduled. Between the consultation and the surgery, it’s completely normal to feel anxiety. We encourage you to reach out to your provider's office with any questions or concerns to ease your mind.

As part of our commitment to patient well-being, Community offers the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Program. ERAS is designed to make the recovery process smoother, faster and less complicated for patients. It includes preparation before admission — including nutrition and physical fitness — reducing stress during the operation, pain relief afterward and post-surgery movement. This program is known to shorten recovery time by 30%. Talk to your provider about whether ERAS will be part of your recovery phase.
