Overnight and daytime testing is performed on an outpatient basis at Community sleep centers. Patients are monitored in comfortable private bedrooms that resemble upscale hotel rooms. Special equipment will record information about brain waves, breathing, heart rate and oxygen level while the patient sleeps. The measuring devices do not cause any discomfort or disrupt sleep.

Need to reschedule or cancel?
If you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment, please call the center at which you were scheduled. Notice of 48 hours is appreciated so your appointment time can be filled.
Bring your usual sleeping attire and personal items (books, magazines, videos, etc.) you would like.
Remain awake and do not nap during the day of the study.
Do NOT drink alcoholic beverages or beverages with caffeine (coffee, tea, soft drinks, etc.) the day of the study.
If you take prescription medications, please bring them with you, in original containers, so that they may be taken on schedule. There are NO medications available at the testing facility.
Please bathe and be sure to shampoo your hair before coming to the sleep center. Please do NOT put any conditioners, hair spray or oils on your hair. Electrodes must be applied to your scalp, so please ensure our technologists can do so; if we are unable to access your actual scalp, we will be unable to complete your study (ANY products that cover or block ANY part of your scalp MUST not be present at the time of testing).
Please have your evening meal before arriving for the sleep study.
Bring a valid photo ID and your insurance card(s).
What to expect
When you arrive you will need to ring the doorbell.
It may be necessary to have you wait in the lobby for a few minutes before being escorted by a technician to your room.
Once you are in your room, there will be time for you to relax and get comfortable. Your technologist will then go through the testing process and answer any questions you may have.
We will be monitoring to measure your brainwaves (EEG), breathing, oxygen, leg movements, and heart rate/rhythm. It takes approximately 30 – 45 minutes to get all the wires and sensors in place. The wires are gathered back into a ponytail behind your head.
Once the testing is started and the lights are turned out, you will need to notify your technician if/when you need to get out of the bed for any reason.
TV and radio are not allowed once the test has begun.
The actual test will be a minimum of six hours.
After the sleep study is completed, you will be able to leave, if no other testing has been scheduled.
Shower facilities are available in each private room. We can provide soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, and deodorant, upon request.
If you are staying for a daytime test, breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Your test results will be analyzed by a sleep specialist. The results will then be sent to the physician who referred you to the center.
Sleep test results
The results will be sent to the referring physician approximately two weeks after the test.
Note: When you receive your billing for these tests, you will receive two statements. The hospital bill includes charges for technicians, equipment and supplies. The physician bill includes charges for the supervision and interpretation of the test results.
Insurance
Most insurance companies cover sleep disorder testing under the Outpatient Diagnostic Testing portion of their policy. Please call your insurance company regarding your personal coverage.
