Pulmonary Rehabilitation

If you have a chronic lung disease - such as emphysema, bronchitis, asthma, pulmonary artery hypertension, pulmonary fibrosis, or other restrictive lung disease - you may be interested in the pulmonary rehabilitation program at Community. People who live with pulmonary disease can be helped with therapy and exercise. It is our goal to provide you with techniques that can help you control your symptoms and disease. We want to help you breathe easier.

The pulmonary rehabilitation program is available to people suffering from chronic pulmonary disease and who meet insurance guidelines based on individual diagnosis criteria. Patients must be referred to the program by a physician.

Community Heart and Vascular Hospital

Phase I Pulmonary Rehab

This is the inpatient portion of your recovery in the hospital.

Phase II Pulmonary Rehab

This is an outpatient program located at Community Heart and Vascular Hospital*. Phase II focuses on skills training and physical reconditioning. The program meets 2-3 days per week, up to 36 sessions. During this part of the program, your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, breathing technique, and response to exercise are monitored. During your program, we send progress reports to your physician so that he or she is kept up-to-date on your status. You will also receive support in the appropriate following areas:

Pulmonary Management

Pulmonary management is presented by a registered respiratory therapist, exercise specialist and/or registered nurse and may include:

  • The function of a healthy respiratory system
  • The disease process
  • Breathing retraining and proper coughing techniques
  • Muscle strengthening and relaxation exercises to control shortness of breath
  • Starting a monitored exercise program
  • Stop-smoking education and assistance
  • Tips on daily living to conserve energy
  • How to use inhalers and spacers
  • Oxygen needs evaluation
  • Stress management/coping techniques
  • Identification of respiratory problems and how to avoid them
  • Assistance with home respiratory care
  • Aerosol therapy/chest percussion and postural drainage techniques

Lifestyle Management

A clinical psychologist, as well as, all rehab staff members are available to evaluate current habits and discuss the following lifestyle changes:

  • Teaching and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices, including diet, exercise and medication compliance
  • Promoting strategies for improved stress management
  • A clinical psychologist is available for evaluation, including utilizing lifestyle medicine to enhance quality of life

Medication Management

Medication management is presented by a registered pharmacist, registered nurse or respiratory therapist and may include:

  • Review of prescribed medication plan
  • Purpose of each medication
  • Common side effects and how they can be minimized
  • Importance of following prescribed medication plan

Nutritional Management

Nutritional management is presented by a nutritionist and may include:

  • Assessment of current nutrition plan with problems identified
  • Individual diet plan development
  • Education of the basic guidelines of nutrition and fluid for people with chronic lung disease

Paying for Rehabilitation

Most medical insurance plans will reimburse for the pulmonary rehabilitation costs. Information about insurance coverage should be verified through your insurance carrier or place of employment before starting the program.

Phase III

Phase Ill is a maintenance course for graduates of Phase II. This program is available on the north side of Indianapolis at BodyZone Fitness Center. A friendly staff member is always available to answer questions and assess and encourage patients as needed. This is a self-directed exercise program with minimal staff involvement. Phase Ill is not covered by insurance and is paid out of pocket.

Community Howard

Community Hospital Anderson

Paying for Rehabilitation

Most medical insurance plans will reimburse for the pulmonary rehabilitation costs. Information about insurance coverage should be verified through your insurance carrier or place of employment before starting the program. A physician referral is required for participation.

Phase III Pulmonary Rehab

Phase III Pulmonary Rehab is a medically supervised maintenance program usually beginning upon completion of Phase II monitored rehab. This program consists of three sessions per week and is designed to promote independence, including learning the skills for self-monitoring your activity, self-progression and education. An individual exercise program will be created for you with progression as appropriate. Phase III is not covered by insurance and costs $30 per month. Call 765-298-5185 for more information.
