Breast Surgery Plan

At Community Breast Care, we understand that preparing for breast cancer surgery involves many emotions and that you may have concerns. Our breast oncology surgeons and their dedicated staff provide a tailored approach, ensuring your surgical plan and experience are exceptional. We work hand-in-hand with you to finalize the surgical plan, set the date, and coordinate all the details throughout the surgery journey.

Step 1: Finalize Surgical Plan

finalized surgical plan is a shared decision between you and your surgeon. This plan incorporates the surgeon’s recommendations based on clinical parameters, your final work-up and your personal preferences.

Based on your diagnosis, the following appointments may also need to be completed prior to finalizing your surgical plan:

  • Breast MRI: Your provider may recommend that you complete a breast MRI to inform the diagnosis.
  • Genetic Counseling: A genetic consult may be recommended to understand hereditary cancer risks.
  • Additional Biopsies or Imaging: If necessary, your care team may request a second-look ultrasound, stereotactic biopsy, bone scan or PET/CT scans.

Step 2: Set Tentative Surgery Date

After your initial work-up is complete, you may receive a tentative surgery date. This date may change depending on the following factors:

  • Medical Clearances: Your provider or a referred specialist will provide appropriate clearances depending on medical history (cardiac, pulmonary, etc.).
  • Pre-Op Clinic: If you have multiple co-morbidities or a complex medical history you may meet with a nurse or a physician at the pre-op clinic to review test and lab results, discuss your medical-surgical history, and ask questions about your upcoming surgery.
  • Specialist Consults: You may be referred to a plastic surgeon, medical oncologist or radiation oncologist prior to surgery.

Step 3: Surgery Confirmation

Your final surgery details and instructions will be confirmed 1-2 weeks prior to your surgery date. You may receive these instructions via:

  1. MyChart: The fastest way to communicate and receive updates
  2. Phone Call: A personal follow-up from our scheduling team
  3. Mail: A formal letter mailed to your primary home address
