Early case study shows how digital identity assurance can streamline patient access, enhance security, and reduce support burdens
INDIANAPOLIS (May 19, 2025)—Community Health Network, one of Indiana’s largest and most trusted health systems with over 200 care sites and a strong track record of digital innovation, has expanded its partnership with CLEAR (NYSE: YOU), the secure identity platform, to deploy CLEAR1, a reusable identity solution, within MyChart. An early case study released today offers a real-world look at how digital identity assurance can improve access, reduce risk, and ease operational strain in healthcare while laying the groundwork for a more connected, identity-first healthcare experience.
With digital access now essential to the care journey, traditional identity methods—like knowledge-based authentication (KBA)—have become a growing liability, unable to meet today’s secure identity needs. These tools often led to patient drop-off, rising support costs, and security gaps.
Support desks have become frequent targets for identity-based attacks, as bad actors are increasingly impersonating patients or employees to access sensitive systems. At Community, legacy verification tools—such as KBA—not only had low pass rates (~62%) but also relied on cumbersome workflows with up to 12 manual fields, driving up call center volume and increasing vulnerability. These issues were particularly visible in MyChart account creation, where friction led to duplicate accounts and costly support interventions.
“This is an important step in safeguarding our data, our systems, and the care we provide,” said Rick Copple, Chief Information Officer at Community Health Network. “We’re proud to introduce CLEAR’s identity platform that not only enhances security and protects against unauthorized access but also simplifies the experience for both our caregivers and patients. By ensuring that everyone is exactly who they claim to be, we’re laying the foundation for a more secure, identity-first healthcare ecosystem.”
Community first implemented CLEAR1 for workforce account recovery using biometric MFA, verifying over 97% of employees. Building on that success, the health system expanded CLEAR1 into patient-facing workflows.
“Healthcare needs identity infrastructure that’s not just secure but seamless, scalable, and trusted by patients. Community Health Network is setting the standard for what that looks like,” said David Bardan, GM and Head of Healthcare at CLEAR. “By integrating CLEAR1 into MyChart, they’ve shown how quickly health systems can reduce risk, improve access, and build stronger relationships with their patients—all while easing the burden on staff.”
Community launched a new, selfie-based verification flow for MyChart account creation. The early results show a measurable impact:
- 93% verification success rate (up from 62%)
- 54% reduction in account-related support calls
CLEAR1 is fully aligned with HIPAA, IAL2, and AAL2 standards—offering the high-assurance identity security healthcare organizations demand, while maintaining ease of use for patients and staff.
Community deployed CLEAR for MyChart account creation in just five weeks using CLEAR’s off-the-shelf integration with Epic Vendor Services, a rapid timeline that underscores how turnkey the deployment can be. Looking ahead, Community is especially excited about the integration’s future availability via the Epic Toolbox*, which will make CLEAR even more embedded within MyChart and offer an even smoother, more scalable experience for health systems.
Community patients now access MyChart with the snap of a selfie—from checking test results to scheduling appointments. What was once a fragmented process is now fast, intuitive, and secure, giving patients more confidence and control over their digital health experience.
Community’s deployment also shows that improving identity workflows doesn’t require months of planning or heavy development. In today’s environment of rising security threats and growing digital expectations, their approach offers a practical blueprint for health systems ready to act.
As a fast follow, Community has already expanded its use of CLEAR to support patient account recovery, addressing 140,000 self-service password resets and 15,000+ password reset calls it receives each year, to enhance operational efficiency and security. Future use cases include patient check-in and visitor management—advancing a vision of continuous, identity-first care.
