Community Heart and Vascular Hospital becomes first in Indianapolis to implant EV ICD
Indianapolis (May 4, 2024) – Community Health Network continues to battle heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States, by providing innovative technology for patient care and treatment.
In May, Community Heart and Vascular Hospital became the first hospital in Indianapolis to implant Medtronic’s Aurora EV-ICD™. This system is a first-of-its-kind extravascular defibrillator to treat sudden cardiac arrest and abnormal heart rhythms with defibrillation and anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP). It is the only implantable cardioverter defibrillator placed outside the vascular space.
“In another first this year, we implanted the first two EV-ICD in Indianapolis”, said Dr. Krishna Malineni, cardiac electrophysiologist and cardiologist. “This technology allows extravascular defibrillation and anti-tachycardia pacing for patients at risk for sudden cardiac death.”
This is the latest implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) option for treatment for patients with a dangerously fast heartbeat or a high risk of dangerous irregular heartbeats, usually due to a weak heart muscle. The EV-ICD is a small battery-powered device that detects and stops irregular heartbeats. The device continuously checks the heartbeat. It delivers electric shocks, when needed, to restore a regular heart rhythm.
