Galleri test provided to firefighters for multi-cancer early detection
GREENWOOD (October 3, 2024)—This week, through a partnership between Community Health Network, GRAIL, and Greenwood Fire Department, 56 firefighters were tested for more than 50 types of cancer at a screening event that could save lives.
According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), cancer is a leading cause of death for firefighters. Research shows their exposure to hazardous substances in their line of work puts them at a higher risk for certain types of cancer than the general population.
The Galleri test offers cutting-edge innovation for early cancer detection. A simple blood draw can detect a signal for more than 50 types of cancer before symptoms appear. The Galleri test, manufactured by GRAIL, was offered during a 3-day screening event to current and retired Greenwood firefighters at the fire department headquarters located at 155 East Main Street. The testing was provided for free to the department through a generous donation by the Community Health Network Foundation.

“Firefighters are in an occupation that has an increased chance of a lot of different types of cancers,” said Jayme Washel, Greenwood Fire Department Chief. “This gives our firefighters opportunity for early detection through predictive analytics.”
“Firefighters are predisposed to developing cancer throughout their lifetime due to the carcinogen exposure they face in their line of work as they serve our communities,” said Dr. Patrick McGill, Community Health Network Chief Transformation Officer. “We are privileged to partner with GRAIL, Greenwood and other fire departments in our communities for cancer screening events that could save lives.”

Community has also partnered with Fishers and Lawrence Township fire departments in the Indianapolis area to offer Galleri testing for free to firefighters as part of its mission to enhance the health and well-being of the communities it serves.
