INDIANAPOLIS (October 28, 2023)—Indianapolis-based Community Health Network hosted Indiana’s 2nd annual Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit, drawing hundreds of students, parents, school, and community leaders to Saturday’s event.

Held at Lawrence Central High School, the program included speakers, panel discussions, and breakout sessions for 3rd grade through post high school students to participate in hands-on activities and simulations.

Black Men in White Coats is an organization founded in 2013 in response to a report that highlighted the decreasing number of black men applying to medical school. By working closely with medical schools, high schools, and physicians, the organization aims to provide inspiration and mentorship to youth who may be interested in healthcare as a profession.

The Youth Summit has been held in major cities across the country. Community Health Network sponsored the inaugural event in Indiana in 2022 and plans to continue to support this event annually.

“We are proud to be part of an event that inspires young black students to see themselves as medical professionals,” said Deborah Whitfield, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director of Community Outreach and Engagement for Community Health Network. “With a shortage of black physicians in our country, this is a positive step in ensuring a more equitable system of care.”
