Community outreach event to provide free breast health exams for women

For release on September 21, 2021

Kokomo—Community Howard Regional Health announced today that the hospital and community partners are coming together to offer a free physical breast health exam for women at Carver Community Center on Wednesday, October 6.

The free screening event, which will also offer blood pressure, glucose and BMI screenings, is being made possible through a joint effort between Community Howard, Project Access, Carver Community Center and Minority Health Alliance.

The screening and wellness event will take place from 2 – 6 p.m. on October 6 at the Carver Community Center, located at 1030 N Purdum Street in Kokomo.

The physical breast exam will be offered by Angie Bowman, NP, a nurse practitioner with Community Internal Medicine Care, within the privacy of the hospital’s Community CareMobile health bus. The exam is being offered to any woman age 25 or above that has not had a mammogram or physical breast exam in the past year. The physical exam takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

About 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer during their life, according to the American Cancer Society. Early detection is critical to improved treatment outcomes.

Registration is required for this free event. To register, call Project Access at 765-854-0544 (select option 2 in the phone tree). Registration closes at 4 p.m., on October 1. Registration for this event is limited and may close prior to October 1 if all appointments are filled.
