Easy Ways of Connecting with Community Fairbanks Alumni

Community Fairbanks Recovery Center has a tried-and-true recipe for positive alumni experiences. The Community Fairbanks Alumni Association is brought together by family, friends and fellowship. Sprinkle in safe, sober and fun events for life-long alumni connections and recovery.

Sarah Stillerman, who heads the Community Fairbanks alumni and volunteer programs says, “Being a person in long-term recovery and being an alumnus of a treatment center is part of my identity today, and I think it’s important to share that so others can see there’s nothing to be ashamed of. This is a “we thing”. I’ve learned three very important pieces to incorporate in my lifestyle: recovery, service and unity. Without unity, we can’t have a community!”

The Alumni Association is a great way to get involved in all three of these areas.

Participate in Events

Alumni Association events are a positive way for alumni to stay connected with each other. Open mic nights are popular for self-expression and fellowship. Music, comedy, and poetry are just a few of the talents shared.

“In active addiction, I lost the ability to truly have fun. Sobriety has allowed me to find myself and enjoy endless opportunities, laugh and spend quality time with friends and family. Mic Night is a great way to network or simply sit back and enjoy some live music,” says Sarah.

There are also opportunities for the alumni to get together for special events throughout the year.

Volunteer

Alumni are welcomed and encouraged to come back and volunteer. The only requirement is a minimum of 30 days of continuous sobriety and motivation to continue a lifestyle in recovery. Volunteering gives alumni an opportunity to share their experience, strength and hope and show clients what life can look like after treatment and active in recovery.

Sarah notes, “As a person in long-term recovery and an alumnus of a treatment center, I’ve experienced, and continue to experience, the power of connection with others in recovery and know firsthand how important fun and selfless work are in my sobriety. Service work and volunteering is a great way to stay out of myself and give back without expecting anything in return.”
