Indianapolis (July 9, 2026) — Community Heart and Vascular Hospital, part of Community Health Network, has reached a major milestone in the early detection of lung cancer, performing its 1,000th robotic-assisted bronchoscopy procedure using the Ion Endoluminal System.
This achievement reflects the hospital’s ongoing commitment to advancing early lung cancer diagnosis, improving patient outcomes, and expanding access to innovative, minimally invasive technology.
Robotic bronchoscopy is an innovative procedure that allows physicians to navigate deep into the lungs with enhanced precision and stability to biopsy small or hard-to-reach nodules. Earlier and more accurate diagnosis of lung cancer gives patients more treatment options and can significantly improve survival rates.

Community Heart and Vascular Hospital’s robotic bronchoscopy program is nationally recognized for its impact. Among more than 900 Ion programs across the United States, the program ranks in the top 50 globally for patient impact and top 10 in the north central region.
The program plays a key role in what clinicians call a “stage shift” in lung cancer care—identifying cancer at earlier stages, before it spreads, when treatment is more effective and outcomes are significantly better.
