KOKOMO, IN (January 16, 2025) – Community Health Network MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy Institute (SCTCTI) achieved a significant milestone this week with the administration of its first chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy infusion.
Led by Medical Director Dr. Sherif Farag, this marks a pivotal achievement for the newly established program and reinforces the institute’s commitment to advancing cancer treatment.
CAR T-cell therapy is a cutting-edge, personalized treatment that leverages a patient’s own immune system to target and fight cancer more effectively. The innovative therapy involves collecting T-cells—specialized immune system cells—from the patient’s blood and inserting a new gene into the cells to help them recognize and attack cancer. Once modified, these CAR T-cells are infused back into the patient following chemotherapy, where they begin their work fighting the disease.
“This is a groundbreaking moment for our program and for the patients we serve,” said Dr. Farag. “CAR T-cell therapy represents a transformative step forward in cancer treatment, and we are proud to bring this life-saving option to our community.”
In October 2024, Community MD Anderson announced the launch of the Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy Institute and the admission of its first stem cell patients.
