Community Hospital East receives Level III neonatal, obstetric care certification

For release on January 04, 2022

Babies with greatest needs can now get care close to home

Indianapolis, IN—Community Health Network announced that Community Hospital East has achieved Level III certification for both obstetrics and neonatal care by the Indiana Department of Health.

As a Level III hospital, mothers with complex pregnancies, newborns who are born premature or at low birth weight and babies requiring intensive care can now be cared for at Community East.

"Our maternity and NICU teams continue to work to raise the standard of care for our mothers and babies," said Rainey Martin, Director of Nursing for Maternity and NICU Services at Community Hospital East. "We have NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) providers and NICU respiratory therapists in-house 24/7, so we are prepared at any moment to respond to complications that may arise."

While most women can safely deliver at a low acuity hospital, women and newborns with complex high-risk conditions have better outcomes when delivered in hospitals with specialty and subspecialty services. Studies show states that have certified perinatal levels of care have lower infant mortality rates, reduced healthcare costs and improved health outcomes.

In 2019, Indiana legislated rules based on best practice guidelines by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and directed the Indiana Department of Health to establish a program to certify the perinatal levels of care available at all Indiana birthing facilities. A Level III hospital provides care for complex conditions and complications.

Community Hospital North achieved this designation in 2019. Community Howard Regional Health, Community Hospital Anderson and Community Hospital South have all achieved a Level II designation.
