Stress vs. Anxiety: The Difference

Life can be hectic. And we all know that daily pressures can trigger some strong emotions. But with over 40 million American adults struggling with anxiety disorders, how can you tell the difference between everyday stress and persistent anxiety? Here are a few key ways to tell the two apart.

Stress

Stress is the body’s natural response to a difficult situation. It spikes and subsides, but it’s not a constant feeling. You probably experience stress when there's a work challenge or a pile of bills to be paid. Small triggers, like your morning commute, could lead to weird reactions such as stomach aches, hives and trouble focusing. But, once the bills are paid or you arrive at work after your commute, you feel lighter. Simply put, stress symptoms vanish.

Anxiety

Anxiety often feels like never ending stress that you can't quite figure out the source of. You may find yourself waking up full of dread, or you just can’t shake the feeling that things are out of control. The worry prohibits you from working, concentrating or having fun. If you are exhibiting these symptoms and feelings more often than not, you may have an anxiety disorder. It's worth talking to your care team or others in your life for support. They can help.

"I think I have anxiety"

Although anxiety is an ongoing condition, it is treatable. From therapy to medications — or a combination of the two — there are care options for you. If you think you might have anxiety, it’s best to consult your primary care provider. Don't have one? Search for primary care providers near you:
