Grief is a human experience that everyone will go through, however some face it earlier in life than others. Fortunately, there are ways to help children and adolescents process grief in a healthy way. That’s why Community Health Network created Camp Unity. This program normalizes the grieving process for young children and teens while also providing them a space to just be kids. Here’s a bit about what you can expect at Camp Unity.
What is Camp Unity?
Camp Unity is a free, weekend getaway camp for children and teens who are grieving the death of someone close to them. Enrollment is for children and teens between the ages of 6 and 17, and is first come, first served. If you have more than one child within the age range, it’s encouraged to have siblings come together.
What Do Kids Do at Camp Unity?
Because grief can show up in different ways, it’s important children and teens have the right outlet to express their feelings. Camp Unity combines physical activity and emotional support in one safe environment.
Volunteers and campers come together for sharing and storytelling activities to create bonds with others who are experiencing grief. Forming that sense of community can help alleviate the often-lonely feeling of grief or the isolation that comes with it. Throughout your child’s journey, they’ll learn coping skills that will better help them manage their grief in a healthy way — like expressing themselves through arts and crafts or music.
There are also several physical activities offered. From yoga and swimming to wall climbing and zip line — and everything in between, there is something for all ages and abilities.
It’s important to note that no child is forced to participate in any of the activities. We know that everyone is different and may not feel up to the task. And that’s okay! Campers always reserve the right to pass. We just ask that they communicate this with the volunteers leading the activity.
When and Where Is It?
The 2025 Camp Unity program will be hosted Friday, August 8, through Sunday, August 10, at Camp Pyoca in Brownstown, Indiana.
Those attending camp will meet at a central drop-off location, and a bus will drive them to Pyoca Camp and Retreat Center (free of charge).
How and When Do You Register?
It starts with filling out an individual application for each camper that wishes to attend. Once your family has registered, you’ll receive an email with times and locations for signing up for a meeting with camp leadership. The face-to-face meeting allows us to get to know campers and their families. And it allows you or your child to ask any questions.
Camper registration opens on April 1!
The Benefits
Camp Unity is a truly unique experience. Grief is often lonely, especially as a kid. But at Camp Unity, they’re able to openly express their grief and meet other people who’ve experienced the same kind of loss. Camp helps them to connect quickly and provide support for each other throughout the weekend. We’ve even had former campers return as volunteers because of the impact of this weekend. It’s a great place for your children to learn how to manage grief.
