Getting a cancer diagnosis is never something one expects in life, let alone in early adulthood. During a time in life when many are focused on college, first jobs, buying homes, and starting families, the extra stress of a cancer diagnosis can make the future feel incredibly uncertain.
Only about 5% of cancer cases occur in people between the ages of 20 and 39. The rarity of this can make patients feel even more anxious and alone. That's why oncology genetic counselor, Cara Yobbi, created the Young Adult Social and Support group (YASS) at Community Health Network.
The Roots
In 2018, Yobbi was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma at the age of 30. The unexpected news and isolation led her to seek out support groups. However, she felt out of place being the youngest in the room.
While battling cancer and working alongside patients with similar conditions, Yobbi realized the need for a specialized group that focused on the intricacies of receiving a cancer diagnosis in young adulthood.
Determined to help others, she approached her manager at Community to develop this support group, and the rest is history. The group officially formed in October of 2019, and it has been held virtually since April 2020.
A Unique Community
YASS brings together young adults with similar health experiences in an encouraging, welcoming, and compassionate environment. Finding connections with others is validating and lessens the feeling of seclusion. And, for people dealing with cancer already, helping others that are newly diagnosed can be healing and meaningful.
What sets this group apart is that it is meant for people aged 20-39 - an age range where socialization and connection are key stepping stones in personal growth. Seeing friends starting families, going to concerts, dating, and traveling while you're going through treatment can make you feel detached. With the help of YASS, you no longer have to feel alone.
However, this group isn't just for cancer patients and survivors. Caregivers of young adults with diagnoses are welcome to join the meetings and express their experiences as well.
YASS Meetings and More
The Young Adult Social and Support group continues to grow and welcomes anyone interested in joining. All members can attend sessions that fit their schedule as they please. Oftentimes, different patients join the virtual sessions depending on their health and availability at the time. The meetings aren't required; they simply provide a place for members to talk about their feelings when needed most.
The monthly meetings are relaxed discussion-based sessions. Members may voice whatever opinions, experiences and stories they are willing to share. Participants can find commonalities in the discussion while giving advice and moral support.
It isn't all talk therapy, however. Social events are also planned throughout the year to get members engaged. In the past, the support group has held pajama and movie nights, virtual yoga days, and outdoor activities like hiking.
The virtual aspect allows for more members - especially those who aren't feeling well enough to leave the house - to participate in the meetings. It also means people outside of the Indianapolis area can join the support community. Location should never be a barrier to receiving support.
Members participate in the meetings by joining a secure online meeting provided by Community.
The Young Adult Social and Support group meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m., EST.
